How much does a door cost ?

Replacing doors can help you save money on your energy bill and should be strongly considered if your doors are more than 10 years old. Newer doors contain the most up to date technology to help keep the interior of your home at the perfect temperate. You also need to take into consideration if you want solid wood doors or hollow doors that have veneer or laminate surfaces. Regardless of what you choose, here is a breakdown of common door replacement cost.

Entrance Doors Prices.

Entrance doors are often thought of as the “smile” to your house and as such they come in many different styles. These doors are also built stronger than interior doors as they are designed to protect the homeowner from unwanted guests as well as the elements of the weather. These doors also have holes drilled for door knobs as well as dead bolts. Depending on how fancy you want your door to be, plan on spending anywhere from $600 to $2,250. This includes both the price of the door and installation. Prices will vary depending on the type of material that the door is made out of (steel door will be on the higher end of the estimate while vinyl and wood doors will be on the lower end).

Sliding Glass Doors Prices.

A sliding glass door will cost you approximately $1,200 to $3,000 which includes the price of the door and installation. However, keep in mind that it is not often that one sliding glass door will perfectly fit where a previous sliding glass door was located. There are modifications that will need to be made to the frame and you should plan to spend anywhere from an additional $150 to $600 for these modifications.

Interior Doors Prices.

Regular doors – A normal interior door will run you approximately $225 to $750 installed. This is for the door and installation and does not include the price of a “pre-hung” door that includes the frame (add approximately $150 to $300 per door if you want “pre-hung”). The overall price will depend on if you choose a regular door that is veneer wood (hollow inside) or a solid wood door.

Pocket Doors - Pocket doors are another great feature for interior doors if you are looking to save space. Pocket doors slide in and out of pockets in the wall so they are only exposed when they are closed. A pocket door will cost you approximately $1,500 to $2,250 installed. The overall price will depend on the condition of the wall where the door will be installed. It will run on the lower end of the estimate if your home is new construction and the wall is open. It will run on the higher end if modifications need to be made to existing walls.

Installation Cost.

If all you want is the cost of installation, then you should be prepared to pay anywhere from $50 to $200 per door for regular interior door installation, $1,200 to $1,800 for pocket door installation, and $600 to $1,200 for sliding glass door installation. Of course door installation cost will vary depending on the type of door that you want to install and any modifications that are necessary to ensure a proper fit.

Additional Price Consideration.

Replacing your doors could allow you to claim a credit on your federal income tax return. Make sure to check the current credits versus the doors that you purchase. If you must purchase a certain energy efficient rated door in order to receive the credit, make sure that the doors you purchase contain this rating (look at the bright yellow tag on the door itself for this information).

Keep in mind that most exterior doors cannot be ordered in the specific color that you want. You will need to consider the cost of painting your exterior door the specific color that you want. Although you can do this yourself, make sure to check and see if this is included in the price quote from your contractor.
