Countertop costs.
Sometimes it’s not necessary to go all out on a kitchen remodeling to simply spruce up your kitchen or give it a different feel. Replacing or refinishing your existing kitchen countertops can be a very cost effective way of transforming your kitchen into something quite different.
There are many different types of kitchen countertops available to choose from and simply replacing old ones for new, or upgrading them to something a little better, can be a good home improvement option. So what are the typical costs involved when replacing or refinishing countertops in your kitchen?
Concrete Countertops.
Costs can vary based on factors such as your location, the skill of the contractor and complexity of what you want. A more sophisticated or complex concrete countertop design involving curves or separate sections can easily cost 10% to 15% more than a simple straight run countertop installation. The pattern and edging, number of cutouts, thickness of the slab, as well as custom coloring can all push the price up from the bottom of the range.
The bottom end of the cost range for concrete countertops starts at around $5,500 (or $100 per square foot) for a typical 55 square foot area while high-end concrete countertops might cost in the region of $135 per square foot. These costs include material, labor and installation, and take into account the normal allowance for sink cutouts, edging fabrication, leveling and seaming.
Terrazo Countertops.
Most estimates will require an onsite visit before finalizing the estimate, to inspect the site and take into account all aspects of the installation.
Costs for installing Terrazo countertops can range from around $90 to $105 per square foot for a typical surface area including installation costs. Depending on the quality of Terrazo and the design, expect to pay an extra 10% to 15% if the installation requires a lot of cutting, more intricate design work, or a thicker slab.
Marble Countertop Costs.
Installing marble countertops can costs on average from $75 to $120 per square foot for the marble plus installation between $7.50 and $8.50 per square foot, so for a standard 55 square foot kitchen installation the total costs should be between $4,000 and $6,330 for materials plus between $400 and $420 for installation. Fully installed and finished, a 55 square foot marble countertop should cost between $4,500 and $7,000. This should include all edging work, seams and appliance cutouts. High-end marble is normally thicker and may have a more regular pattern throughout its length. Marble requires a lot of skill and experience to achieve an excellent finish and you should make sure to hire an experienced marble installation contractor.
Countertop Refinishing Costs.
As an alternative to a full replacement of your countertops, you could consider simply refinishing your existing ones. The process involves applying an acrylic coating over the surface of your current countertops. This fills any small gouges and imperfections and leaves a nice level surface. Modern refinishing methods involve applying an extremely durable epoxy coating which can provide many years of service without damage. Typical countertop refinishing costs range from $6.00 to $9.50 per square foot, including the cost of the acrylic coating.
